Books

  • Anxiety Disorders: Everything you Need to Know. Caldwell, J. Paul. (Firefly Books, 2005). Has a great chapter on anxiety in children and adolescents, with overviews and checklists on a variety of anxiety disorders that occur in childhood.
  • In the Shadows of the Net: Breaking Free of Compulsive Online Sexual Behavior. Carnes, P., Delmonico, D.L. and Griffin, E. (Hazelden, 2001). Educates you about internet porn addiction helps you to understand the syndrome and recognize the signs.
  • Potatoes not Prozac. DesMaisons, Kathleen. (Simon & Schuster, 1999). Great nutritional book; discusses merits of different foods on mood.
  • The Chemistry of Joy. Emmons, H. with Kranz, R. (Simon & Schuster, 2005). Another great nutritional book that helps with an anti-depression diet.
  • Childhood and Society Erickson, Erik H. (WW Norton & Co., 1955). Only one of the fine writings of Erik Erickson—but particularly accessible and easy to read.
  • The 8-Week Fast Track Career Success System Workbook  Quast, Sandy.  Assists counselors in holding career groups or to do individual career counseling. Link to the book website is http://www.8weekcareersuccess.com/
  • If Your Child Has Depression or Bipolar Disorder. Evans, D.L. and Andrews, L.W. (Oxford University Press, 2005). A guide to getting effective help for adolescents with serious mood disorders; has sections on psychiatric medications and current treatments.
  • Solve your Child’s Sleep Problems. Ferber, Richard. (Simon & Schuster, 2006). Gives hands-on advice on how to help your child deal with sleep disruption, sleep schedule abnormalities, etc.
  • Kids in the Syndrome Mix of LD, ADHD, LD, Asperger’s Tourette’s, Bipolar & More!: The one stop guide for parents, teachers and other professionals Kutscher, M.L., Attwood, T. & Wolff, R.R. (Jessica Kingsley Publishers,: 2005) Highly recommended book which outlines current information on causes, symptoms, interactions with other conditions, and treatment for a variety of disorders that occur in childhood. Compensatory techniques/strategies are offered.
  • Fed Up! Winning the War against Childhood Obesity. Okie, Susan. (Joseph Henry Press, 2005). Written by a family physician, this book offers tips on healthy eating and lifestyle; practical suggestions on teaching children how to eat for life; and how to find help for your overweight child.
  • Everything You Never Wanted Your Kids to Know about Sex (But Were Afraid They’d Ask).Richardson, J. and Schuster, M. (Crown Publishers, 2003). Good resource on parenting techniques and childhood sexuality. Includes a section on parenting your sexually active child.
  • Adolescents on the Autism Spectrum: A Parent’s Guide to the Cognitive, Social, Physical and Transition Needs of Teenagers with Austistic Spectrum Disorders. Sicile-Kira, Chantal. (The Berkley Publishing Group, 2006). Offers parents strategies for helping their autistic adolescents of various ability levels, focusing on how to prepare them for adulthood. Great section on transition planning for life after high school.
  • Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls.Simmons, Rachel. (Harcourt Books, 2002.)
  • If Your Child Has an Eating Disorder: An Essential Resource for Parents. Walsh, T.W. and Cameron, V.L. (Oxford University Press, 2005). Provides tips on understanding eatings disorders, navigating the health care system, and looking at current treatment issues, along with practical advice on handling day-to-day life after diagnosis is made. Has a fabulous resource section as well.
